The OSIS Survival Swimming Level 1 course introduces the fundamental skills required to stay safe and respond effectively during an unexpected incident in sheltered water environments.
Participants develop water confidence, survival swimming techniques and essential self-rescue skills through practical, scenario-based training. The course focuses on staying calm, conserving energy, managing exposure to the water and making safe decisions during an emergency.

Developing confidence in the water while understanding basic water safety principles and personal limitations.
Survival Swimming Techniques
Learning practical swimming techniques designed to help participants move safely and efficiently in an emergency situation.
Defensive Swimming
Learning how to position and move through the water while reducing unnecessary energy expenditure.
Floating & Energy Conservation
Developing techniques to remain afloat, control breathing and conserve energy while waiting for assistance.
Self-Rescue Techniques
Learning practical methods to recover from an unexpected entry into the water and return to a safe position.
Capsize & Water Entry Scenarios
Practising controlled responses to unexpected water entry, including remaining calm, assessing the situation and applying appropriate survival techniques.
Basic Rescue Awareness
Understanding how to recognise a person in difficulty and respond safely without unnecessarily placing yourself at risk.

The OSIS Survival Swimming Level 2 – Rapid Ready course develops the skills required to respond to emergencies in moving water environments, covering Class I to Class III white water.
Building on the foundations of Level 1, participants learn how to read and understand river environments, move safely through currents and respond effectively to challenging water scenarios. The course combines practical survival swimming, river rescue techniques, hydrology and the correct use of personal protective and survival equipment.
Topics Covered
Defensive Swimming
Learning how to position the body and use the current to move safely through moving water while protecting the head and maintaining awareness of hazards.
Aggressive Swimming
Developing active swimming techniques to move with purpose across current, towards safety, an exit point or a designated target.
Throw Rope Techniques
Learning how to correctly deploy, throw and manage a throw rope to assist a person in moving water.
River Wading
Developing safe techniques for entering and moving through shallow moving water while assessing current strength, riverbed conditions and potential hazards.
River Hydrology & Morphology
Understanding how water moves through a river system and how river features such as eddies, hydraulics, strainers, drops and channels can affect safety and decision-making.
Survival & Rescue Equipment
Learning to identify, select and correctly use essential river survival and rescue equipment.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Understanding the purpose, correct use and limitations of essential PPE for moving-water environments, including helmets, buoyancy aids and appropriate protective equipment.
