The OSIS Safety Boat Handling Level 1 course introduces the fundamental skills required to safely operate a small powered rescue boat in sheltered waters. Participants will develop practical boat-handling skills using a 15hp or similar powered motorised rescue boat, with an emphasis on safe operation, basic manoeuvring and supporting water-based activities.
The course is designed to build confidence and competence in handling a safety boat while developing an understanding of basic boat systems, marine knots and rescue procedures.
Topics Covered
Boat & Engine Anatomy
Understanding the main components of a safety boat and outboard engine, including their functions and basic operational checks.
Marine Knots
Learning essential knots used for mooring, securing equipment and basic boat operations.
Engine Start & Stop
Learning the correct procedures for starting, operating and safely shutting down a small outboard engine.
Basic Manoeuvring Skills
Developing fundamental boat-handling skills, including forward and reverse movement, steering, turning, speed control and positioning.
Mooring Skills
Learning basic techniques for approaching, securing and leaving a mooring safely.
Rescue Drills
Practising basic rescue-boat procedures and manoeuvres used to approach, assist and recover a person in the water.

The OSIS Safety Boat Handling Level 2 course builds on the skills developed at Level 1, introducing advanced boat-handling and rescue techniques for operating in moving water and more demanding environments.
Participants will develop greater precision and control when manoeuvring a safety boat, while learning advanced mooring techniques, rescue equipment and emergency response procedures. The course focuses on the practical skills required to support and manage rescues efficiently in dynamic water environments.

Advanced Mooring
Developing more advanced techniques for approaching, securing and departing from moorings in varying conditions.
Advanced Boat Control
Building precision and confidence when manoeuvring through tight spaces, around obstacles and in challenging operating environments.
Rescue Devices
Learning how to select, deploy and use appropriate rescue devices and equipment during water-based emergencies.
Basic First Aid
Developing basic first-aid knowledge and practical response skills relevant to incidents encountered during water-based activities.
Fast Pick-Up – J-Scoop
Learning rapid recovery techniques, including the use of a J-Scoop or similar rescue system, to efficiently recover a person from the water.
Capsize Drills
Learning safe and effective procedures for responding to a capsize situation, including self-rescue, crew recovery, and coordinated re-entry techniques. Emphasis is placed on maintaining control, communication, and situational awareness during recovery in dynamic water conditions.
